Sexy models in rubble arouse wrath

POSING sexy models in contrived earthquake rubble and draping them scantily in blood-stained rags is an outrage that has led to sacking of the publisher and top editors of a Chongqing-based newspaper.

New Travel Weekly published the disgusting photos on Monday, the first of three days of national mourning for the victims of the Sichuan Province earthquake.

Instead of actually reporting on the earthquake and paying tribute to the dead, the survivors and rescuers, the magazine published "Reborn in the Rubble.'' It featured sexy models wearing heavy makeup and skimpy "bloody'' clothes. They are posed provocatively in scenes of rubble. Their eyes are empty.

The report contains little significant content. The frivolous photos have no aesthetic value and are visually jarring.

At a time when all public recreational activities, including the Olympic torch relay, were halted for the national mourning, using the earthquake as a sales gimmick is blasphemous, immoral and intolerable. It has hurt the people's feelings.

New Travel Weekly later offered its "most sincere'' apology to the public.

The publication was suspended and its publisher, editor-in-chief and deputy editor-in-chief were all stripped of their posts on May 20.
